BASF to invest "three-digit million euro sum" in advanced battery tech

BASF tech working with lithium-ion batteries

BASF, one of the world's biggest chemical companies, says it will invest "three-digit million euro sum" (that's somewhere between $144 million and $1.43 billion U.S.) over the next five years in research, development and production of advanced battery technologies.

Part of that massive investment will go towards the construction of a cathode facility in Elyria, OH. BASF says this facility will be ready to supply cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries by mid-2012. In addition to cathode production, BASF recently entered the field of electrolytes by establishing a global electrolytes team.

BASF's involvement in battery technology extends beyond lithium-ion to include some of the most promising future battery concepts such as lithium-air and lithium-sulfur. We'll see how far another million and/or billion will take these technologies.
